Transition, et al. v. Austin, et al.Jim Thorsen represented a number of plaintiffs with civil claims under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act (RICO) and related fraud claims in U.S. District Court in Richmond, Virginia. The jury awarded his clients $8,569,620.

Jordan v. Kollman, 269 Va. 569 (2005) – In a defamation case handled by Jim Thorsen, the Virginia Supreme Court reversed the jury verdict and entered judgment in favor of Jim’s client. The case by involved allegations by local politician against Jim’s client for his political advertising.

Blue v. Estate, (Hanover County 2018) – Robert Allen successfully represented the estate of an attorney against a $500,000 claim of legal malpractice. The jury returned a defense verdict. 

In re: Chinese Drywall Cases, (Norfolk Cir. Ct. 2013) – Robert Allen defended a drywall installer whose primary language was not English in consolidated litigation arising from the use of Chinese-manufactured drywall.

DMV Proceedings Robert Allen has defended Virginia motor vehicle dealers in administrative proceedings to terminate a dealer’s franchise agreement.


Zoning and Land Use Cases

Jakabcin v. Town of Front Royal, 271 Va. 660, 628 SE2d 319 (Va. Sup. Ct. 2006) – Robert Allen was co-counsel on appeal for a group of residents in a case of first impression under the State and Local Government Conflict of Interest Act. The ruling obtained on appeal invalidated a land use permit for a Wal-Mart Supercenter that Robert’s clients opposed.

Hale v. Bd. of Zoning Appeals  (Montgomery Cir. Ct. 2008) – At the trial level in this zoning litigation, Robert Allen represented a group of residents in opposition to a “big box” retail development including in defense of a challenge to his clients’ standing to participate in the case. The residents prevailed on appeal. Hale v. Bd. of Zoning Appeals, 277 Va. 250, 673 S.E. 2d 170 (2009).

FDR Services of Virginia, Inc. v. Town of Front Royal (2006-2007) – Robert Allen represented a commercial laundry in a dispute involving utility rates which involved litigation in both state and federal court before the parties ultimately resolved the dispute.
Virginians for Appropriate Rds. v. Capka, 2008 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 6411 (W.D. Va. Jan. 29, 2008) – Robert Allen served as local counsel to an organization in an action against the Federal Highway Administration and Virginia Department of Transportation seeking an injunction against funding and construction of a portion of I-73.
